Cephas Azariah made conditions for observing light between his home studio and Scotland’s Cairngorms National Park. Released on Anjunachill on September 3, the ten-track album grew from months spent recording textures associated with light: sunlight and lightning, candles and artificial illumination.
The British-Indian composer and pianist uses that subject to consider the world around him. Cephas Azariah says, “It reveals both the light and dark of our environment, and marks the beginning of a journey towards something brighter.”
Four collaborations punctuate the sequence. josh & sam who are twins join Azariah on coherence; Be Still the Earth appears on nova. Kidnap shares the credit on lightning, while pianist Yujin Baek joins him for the closing if time could rewind us. Those appearances bring electronic producers, an ambient composer and another pianist into the same project.
